The purpose of the BioAnimalChar project is to utilize agricultural biomass by-products to create a new (low-cost) feed supplement based on biochar, which will lead to a significant improvement in the quality of pig feed, and, consequently, in increasing the competitiveness of Greek pig farming internationally.
In the context of the project, two Agricultural Cooperatives and two Producer Groups will provide part of their agricultural biomass (mainly prunings) without modifying the harvesting process, which will be converted into biochar through the reactor of the company KAFSIS S.A. At the same time, a research body (Institute of Bio-economy and Agro-technology, iBO) using ground/aerial surveillance means (NIR and RGB cameras) will estimate the volume of available residual biomass of agricultural bodies, will contribute its expertise to design, parameterization and analysis of the results of the biochar production process, while the produced product (biochar) will be used as a nutritional supplement for pigs of the "AFOI DIDANGELOU AR PAPASIKAS EPE" animal husbandry unit. The American Farm School (AFS) and EfB, as innovation facilitators, will bridge research & industry with the agricultural and livestock community.
